Whether you want to write songs to pitch to music publishers, TV shows and commercials, or record them yourself as an artist, here’s a songwriting method that will help you get your message across and make sure your listeners stay involved from beginning to end. Of course, this is just one approach to songwriting but it’s used by many songwriting pros and it works.
Start your song with a title that appeals to you. Make sure it’s a phrase that rings true in your ears. Something that makes you say, “I’ve got to know more about that!” Because if YOU want to know example topics for a persuasive essay, others will want to know. Listeners like this song form because it provides enough repetition to feel familiar and enough variety to keep them interested. It also gives you, the songwriter, the chance to add emotional dynamics to your song. Many of today’s hit songs feature a conversational, intimate verse followed by a big, powerhouse chorus with plenty of emotional punch. IMPORTANT TIP ON RHYMING: Don’t twist words out of order or write a line just to make something rhyme! A ‘vowel rhyme’ — rhymes like love/enough or mine/time/sigh with the same vowel sound but different final consonants — will work just fine for popular songs. (Songs for musical theater are different – they usually do require perfect rhymes.) Check out a web site like Rhymedesk.com or B-rhymes.com to find lists of interesting, closely rhyming words to use. When we talk we use pitch, volume, phrasing, and rhythm – all the elements of a song melody. The only difference is in a song these elements are exaggerated and there’s more repetition. So if you have a few lyric lines, all you need to do is speak them to get a raw melody started. So let’s say you have this fabulous lyric. It’s got emotion and good song craft but you don’t play guitar or keyboards and can’t write the music. Or you’re a musician who doesn’t write lyrics and can’t take your melody to the next step. Time to look for a co-writer! But before you do that…. write out your lyrics or record your melody. Indicate which section is the chorus, verse, and bridge. That’s a good start. Good songwriters use song craft to give their songs emotional impact and create a memorable experience for listeners. The tools and techniques of our craft are not arbitrary; they weren’t invented just to drive us crazy or make us write copy-cat songs without depth or originality. They exist because, over hundreds of years, songwriters have found that they help listeners to understand, experience, and remember the message at the heart of a song. Let’s say your song title is “You Make Me Smile.” To create raw material based on this title, think of words and images associated with smiling. We can start with obvious ones like “happy software project,” “sunny,” “bright,” and “fun.” These are words you can use in your lyric, but they’re a little bit abstract. Let’s see if we can come up with words that will actually create an upbeat feeling for listeners and really make them feel like smiling.
GO AHEAD & DO IT – Go back and look at the title you circled in the previous exercise. What questions does it suggest to you? What would you like to say about it? Make a list of questions you’d like to answer. Then add any questions you think listeners might have. Once you get familiar with this basic song structure, there are plenty of add-ons and variations to play with. Some songs have a pre-chorus or extra post-chorus hook. But try using this one to get started. It’s been the foundation of many huge hits and many more to come. Idea #3: Check out clubs in your area that feature local artists. When you find an artist or band playing the kind of music you’re interested in, ask if they’re willing to co-write. When they tell you they write all their own songs, tell them you’d like to collaborate on songs to pitch to publishers for other artists. They’ll be interested. Study songs by your favorite artists to learn what they’re doing. Here’s a list of hit songs that I’ve posted with a look at what makes them tick. You’ll find tips on how to use these ideas in songs of your own. You don’t need to reinvent the wheel every time you write a song. Stand on the shoulders of giants; use what others have discovered and build on it. Make it your own! Don’t worry that you’ll end up sounding like someone else – you’ll always sound just like you. No one else has your creative ideas, your voice, your thoughts thesis statements for argumentative essays, or your talents! You make me dance like fool Make a list of words and images the title suggests Now, let’s begin to turn your title into a great lyric by simply asking a few questions – the questions suggested by your title. If you use these questions as a guide when writing your lyric, you’ll be able to… Many of today’s top TV dramas and films use songs to add mood, energy, and atmosphere to scenes. A lyric with a single, strong emotional focus is ideal for this use. If you’re interested in this market, begin to study how songs are used in commercials, TV shows, and films. Notice how they enhance and deepen the effect of the scene. Before we go any further, it’s be a good idea to get familiar with one very important aspect of songwriting: Song Structure. A clear, easy-to-follow structure acts like a path websites that write essays for you, leading your listener through your song from beginning to end. A clear song path will keep listeners involved in your song all the way through. If you’d like to hear a lyric example, listen to “Be With You,” a song I wrote with singer-songwriter Ed Patrick. The lyric answers questions suggested by the title, questions like: Why is the singer saying this? What’s happening? Who is involved? What is the singer feeling? Why is it important to him? Every title suggests questions that need to be answered. Some of the questions will be ones that you want to explore, others will be questions that listeners have. You’ll need to answer both. Let me give you a few examples… You don’t have to reinvent the wheel These progressions aren’t hard to learn. Just by listening to a recent hit song you can learn to play along pretty easily on either guitar or keyboards. There are many YouTube videos that will show you how to play recent hits. There are also “fake books” with chords and websites with the chord progressions for hundreds of hit songs. Just do a quick web search using the song title and the word “chords.” May your songs flow! If you decide to use one of these chord progressions to practice writing a song of your own, just be sure you don’t use any of the melody or lyric from the hit song. These are protected by the copyright law. Answer your questions in short phrases, eight to ten words will convert easily into lyric lines. Write more than you think you’ll need; you won’t use all of it. Remember, it’s just raw material. Explore the possibilities. Don’t worry about rhyming, just say what you want to say. That’s the best place to start. Before you show your lyric or melody to a co-writer critical thinking in math problem solving, enter it in a contest, or otherwise spread it around, it’s a good idea to copyright it with the Library of Congress. You’ll find a printable form, FAQ, and instructions at the Copyright Office Web site. There’s a fee for each form you file, but you can register groups of lyrics or songs on a single form. There’s also an e-filing service at the at the same web site. Just click on “Electronic Copyright office.” It’ll save you some money. Sure enough, these questions are all answered in this great Rock standard. Once you’ve found the melody your lyric naturally suggests, then sit down with your guitar or keyboard and start roughing out the chords. I like to record my vocal ideas before I even start to add chords, that way I can recall the original “spoken word” melody in case I want to go back to it. Of course, there are other ways to write a song melody but this one will give you a great place to start. Know when to take a break Here’s a resource for those of you who don’t play an instrument – and even those who do! Karaoke tracks offer an instant backing track that can inspire ideas and get you singing your lyrics to a contemporary beat. Go ahead and write a song for friends and family or just for songwriting practice. The track itself is copyrighted but generally the chords are not. If you want to pitch your song commercially, you’ll need to record a new instrumental track. You can keep the chords or adapt if needed. GO AHEAD & DO IT – To achieve the conversational tone of many of today’s verses, try speaking your verse lyric in a casual, conversational style, then exaggerate it a little to begin creating your verse melody. Keep the pauses that occur naturally and exaggerate the little ups and downs in your speaking voice. You’ll want to make changes later but, for now, this will give you a good place to start. Remember, this is your raw material, not the finished melody. How to Write a Hit Rock Song How do I make the background sounds fit appropriately? How do I put lyrics in a song? One more thing…. I’m quite confused… does the lyrics of a song have to rhyme? Hi Fidelis. Yes you can, you don’t need a chorus to make a song. Many rappers don’t use choruses. That said they can help make your song catchy, so make some some have them. In this break down, you can either talk, leave it free from any lyrics or voice, or sing your lyrics as normal. Whatever you decide to do, try and make it sound different from the rest of the song. Get a good feel for the song, and allow inspiration for ideas to enter your mind. Firstly, you can build on a line that you have already created. You may have written down a line in a moment of inspiration, and you may find you can create a whole song around the theme of that line. It doesn’t matter how good the lyrics in your song are if they are off beat, so make sure you make your lyrics and song sound like they belong together. In your first verse you want to grab your audiences attention quickly so they want to hear more. In the 2nd verse you continue to build on everything you stated in the first verse. Make sure the 2nd verse is still going on with the same theme, so anyone that has connected with the song so far will continue to be absorbed with what you have to say. As with standard formal letter writing, your address goes at the top right hand corner psychology ideas for a research paper, miss a line and then put the date. The recipient’s address goes on the left side on the line after the date. It is imperative that you address your letter carefully. After spending time wording it to perfection you do not want it to be directed to the wrong person or to go astray. Examples of good opening paragraphs: The Second Paragraph Some job adverts will ask you to include salary requirements, you can choose to ignore this, opting instead to wait until the interview to talk about money, or include a broad salary range, for example £16 – 20K. Employ appropriate margin and paragraph spacing so that your letter is not bunched up at the top of the page but is evenly distributed and balanced. Sign off your covering letter ‘Yours sincerely’ then do not forget to sign it. Write an enclosure line at the bottom. Try to gauge what the company’s business plan is. For example if they have spent a lot of money on a flashy website they could be hoping to expand more into online sales. As accurately as you can try to, know exactly what will be expected of you should you get the job. For example what are the duties of a marketing manager and what qualities they should posses? by Alison Green on June 14, 2007 Here’s an example of a cover letter that would grab me: This letter does the following: Additionally, I am a fast, versatile writer, and I specialize in taking complicated information and presenting it in an easy-to-understand good opinion essay, upbeat format. I’ve never missed a deadline (in a recent performance review, my manager called me “the fastest writer on the planet”) and pride myself on being able to juggle many different projects. My copy-editing skills border on the obsessive-compulsive; I have been known to correct mistakes on restaurant menus! – It’s far more interesting to read than the first cover letter. The Evil HR Lady. who I secretly worship, has shamed me into posting an example of a good cover letter. I am seeking a position that that will utilize my writing skills with opportunity for growth. But first, let’s take a look at what I consider an example of how not to do a cover letter. There’s nothing particularly wrong with this letter — other than being an utterly wasted opportunity, and I’ll explain why: Very few job opportunities do not require a cover letter. Cover letters are a must-have in the application process because they give you an opportunity to showcase your skills beyond the traditional resume. Studies show that people who ask for raises are more likely to get them. The same concept is true in your job application. Ending a cover letter with a request for an interview will lead to more job offers. Job postings often include keywords that show what the company wants in an employee. These keywords represent skill sets that are important because they can be used in your cover letter. Resumes and cover letters should show personal qualities, not tell about them. (Click here to tweet this thought.) Before sending your resume or cover letter, always spell check and proofread your document first. Better yet, have a grammar-minded friend do it for you. Misspellings, typos and errors show you lack attention to detail. Take a look at some examples of real-life cover letter sentences that don’t quite make the cut in the competitive hiring landscape. Employers want to hire someone who cares about their company, not someone who finds all companies in a particular industry interchangeable. At the beginning of every cover letter, state the position you’re applying to. Then describe exactly how your skills and experience are a good fit. You know that next job of yours? Yes, that’s right, the really amazing one with the brilliant co-workers, cool boss, and fresh, free snacks in the office vending machine? That one. Example: Try a high-personality lead in like this: “Having grown up with the Cincinnati Zoo (literally) in my backyard, I understand firsthand how you’ve earned your reputation as one of the most family-friendly venues in the State of Ohio. For 20 years, I’ve been impressed as your customer; now I want to impress visitors in the same way your team has so graciously done for me.” And a last, critical factor when it comes to delivering a great cover letter: Be you. Honest, genuine writing always goes much, much further than sticking to every dumb rule you’ve ever read in stale features of an opinion essay, outdated career guides and college textbooks. Example: Say you’re applying for a marketing job with a baked goods company known for its exquisite tarts and pies. You may want to weave a sentence or two into your cover letter about how you took the blue ribbon in the National Cherry Festival pie eating contest when you were 10, and that you’ve been a pie fanatic ever since. The person who wins that great job will be the one who shows the decision makers, quickly essay about importance of education, that he or she is all three of those things. And you have an amazing opportunity to begin planting these seeds right from the introduction, à la your cover letter. So, how do you pull off a killer cover letter, one that conveys passion and talent and that makes the recruiter or hiring manager’s day? Make sure you do all of these things. I fall somewhere between the two in mine, I think. While we don’t want to copy word for word, I think that finding something in the position, the company, etc to be truly passionate about is the thing to take away from this. I try to sound passionate and excited, because I really do enjoy customer service, but my letters might be coming off to them like “Yeah, she’s passionate about what she does, but is she really passionate about us and what WE do?” @Julie – I totally agree. The first letter was “yadda, yadda” and I couldn’t tell you a thing about it, but the details in the second really stand out and make the author’s personality sing. This comment may be too belated for this post, but it came up when I was trying to see if “right fit” was too informal for a cover letter (I can’t tell if it actually is or if my 71 year-old reviewer is just old-fashioned…). What a great letter! Thank you so much for posting this, Alison. I’ve been struggling with a cover letter for a week now, but this has given me some inspiration. Another thank you! I really like the cover letter examples! Looking at them side by side, I honestly cannot believe how stilted and dry my “before” letter now looks. I used to think it was so good! I thought your “before” letter was fine; kind of ho-hum but certainly nothing wrong with it. But the second one is really great, and I hope that if you haven’t gotten great results with it already that you will soon! I spent DAYS researching before I started writing, and this is a company I’m already a fan of. But I don’t consider that part of the writing process. And yes, my proofreading is also exhaustive – unless I know I’m up against a closing deadline, I’ll write, and then wait a day or two to review so I can look at it with fresh eyes. But my letter above, which clearly is the first of its kind that *I’ve* ever written, really did take me around 30 minutes once I got past a couple false starts and found my voice. Application for position: Manager CRM Business Processes I think that you can add formality to the second letter, but still keep the spirit of the letter. My cover letter to my current position read more like the second than the first (but more formal, no rhetorical questions). I feel much more confident applying for jobs this way even if I don’t get the job. This is the best site by far when it comes to career advice in my opinion. The people in the comments section along with AAM herself are fantastic! Well explanation of essay writing, one of the things that I am now trying to emphasize in my letter is that I entered my current position as the first and only in-house counsel. Management has decided to phase out the position for business reasons and will use outside counsel to take care of issues now that I have built basic legal programs for them. The CEO did state that I opened the company’s eyes to many policies that they didn’t even know they needed. Thank you SO MUCH! I become paranoid when I read interested candidates are requested to send a cover letter along with salary requirements. Please provide me with suggestions for accomplishing my fear. Yes, the first one didn’t have anything wrong with it, per se; it was exactly like most cover letters, and that was the problem. Most people approach their cover letters that way, which makes them just a non-factor in the application. They don’t help at all a personal essay is, but they don’t actively hurt. They just take up a sheet of paper. I’d like to direct your attention to the comment I made above, because it addresses this comment of yours as well as the other one. Thanks. This is awesome comparison. Love it! Is it recommended that we attach our contact information in the last paragraph (just make it easier for the recruiter to call)? I don’t see this in the after-version. It did not, unfortunately. The industry this job was targeting is notoriously hard to break into, and I’m sure the applicant pool was huge. I’ve done some looking at LinkedIn profiles of people in similar roles at other organizations in the industry, and I doubt I was in the top 50% of resumes in terms of direct experience. But it was worth a shot! I’d love to see AAM post a cover letter example for an attorney or a cover letter that’s for a traditionally conservative field. What a crock. So some enthusiasm is expressed in the second letter. Give the b.s.’er a job and let’s how they work out. Give them a chance, put them to task and we’ll see if they are what they say they are. To all b.s. letter writers out there, “be careful what you wish for,” you might get hired for it. Thank you! I was truly lost as to what to write on it and there are limited intern spots available so I was panicking a bit… I appreciate the advice greatly! I’ve been checking cover letters since I am about to write my first, and this is by far the best I’ve ever encountered (after 3 hours of reading some). Thank you very much. ) But you see all these other hiring managers here who like it and disagree with you, right? Isn’t the conclusion to draw that no one letter will be everyone’s cup of tea, rather than calling the letter writer unprofessional and insincere? The point of mentioning building legal polices and procedures where none existed is to create a starting point for how I add value. It demonstrates that I must know the law, how to apply them, how to work with others, how to assess value or follow the value assessed by others, how to achieve business goals etc Very nice! I need to write a cover letter tonight, and this example is giving me Ideas. (I promise not to randomly capitalize for emphasis in my cover letter, pinkie swear!) My pre-Ask-a-Manager cover letters read just like the Before example. I’m still working towards the After. I wish I could sprinkle mine with Westerosi examples, though. That would really spice things up! I’m an attorney, and I’m hiring. I work in-house, but this sort of letter would work for me, and in fact I’d be more likely to interview based on something like it. Some of the wording is a little over the top (i.e. anything with an exclamation point would strike me as weird), but in general this would stand out in a good way. Wow. I want to hire her and I don’t even live near a castle. This comment makes me laugh every time. Thanks. ) Here’s the thing…how much time does it take you to actually *write*? Can you get that first draft on paper in under 30 minutes, or does it take you three hours because you get stuck agonizing over whether to say “used” or “utilized”? If the actual writing process moves fairly quickly, then I think you have the right idea. In today’s world cover letter should be preferably short and to the point and not longer than in your ‘after version’. Hiring Managers are receiving so many a day that it be interesting enough to keep reading. This is beautiful. And the invented subject matter made me grin. Thank you for inspiring me! I can’t wait for an update! Good luck! 10th Feb 14 3:38 reference – Comment from Letter owner – extremely important observation – And yet you’ve got a bunch of hiring managers here saying that this would get their attention. Starting the first two most important paragraphs with “It” and “As” garners a D- from me. There are many more words in the “after” version, which means fewer people will have the patience to read them. If this qualifies as thoughtful advice, the job seekers of the future are in trouble. AMAZING. seriously helped me out so much. this whole morning ive been looking for a great example but ive been coming across bull… something a kid would write up… but wow. thank you. THANK YOU. This cover letter is great! I’ve read it a few times before but after reading even more articles on writing cover letters, I read that cover letters need to be 300 words or under, and this is 378 according to Word. I’m currently writing a cover letter now and want to add a section that describes what I would specifically bring to this role but I’m afraid I’ll be going over the proverbial word amount since hr recruiters and hiring managers have little time to read through 1 when they have thousands more to read on top of that. Thanks! I was particularly proud of that line (although it still doesn’t read quite as smoothly as I’d like). If you could read the job description, you’d see that it calls for, in much more general terms, that breadth of responsibilities. My goal was to show that I grasped the job description without parroting it back to them. I would definitely call you in for an interview and/or hire you! I rarely even get cover letters anymore, and the ones that I do sound more like Letter #1. If I were to get one like #2, I would be intrigued essays on quality of life, and would want to hear more. The North Remembers. I’m not a lawyer but work with lawyers regularly and really liked this cover letter. More conservative field may expect more formal language in a cover letter but I think this one is really well written and excellent for the LW’s position applied for. Fewer, more targeted cover letters are probably going to require less writing overall than more boilerplate, because it likely won’t take you as long to find a job. If people like example cover letters, you might take a peek at http://opencoverletters.com/. They’re anonymous, successful cover letters from librarians and archivists. Thanx for this information sharing and I really enjoy reading it and apply it. Hopefully, this time get a chance of interview. That’s the litmus test. Do you remember anything about the candidate from the letter 20 minutes after you read it? Great way to put it. Game of Thrones? Thanks for sharing this. As a seasoned executive who will soon pursue a major career change, I found this to be an excellent example for my own personal benefit of how to tailor a cover letter; well done. It’s obvious the writer would be a great fit for our office, and I’d be inclined to put this applicant on the top of the stack for an interview. As my deputy would say, it’s a no-brainer decision. I’ve gone from an angry ball of hate from last year to an optimistic, almost happy person. Working toward landing that dream job now… at 11 pm. From there, think of writing a cover letter like the one in this post, but following all the rules that you learned in English class: complete sentences essay on the holocaust, no contractions, no slang. It might help to write the letter initially in your own speaking voice and then go back to edit out any overly casual language. You still want to use short english essay on each one teach one, declarative sentences and convey real enthusiasm. As I said, this letter would require very few changes to be appropriate for law offices. (And as I said before writing sites for students, LW, it’s a great letter–none of this is intended as criticism.) Thanks, everyone! And thanks, Alison, for wanting to share it. This may or may not be great advice, but there certainly are many different hiring managers. If I am the one reading the revised version with all of its brassy shiny disrespectful waste of my time, you won’t be getting the job. Can someone recommend a reputable CV/Resume professional (let’s be bold and throw the cover letter in the mix as well)? This was inspirational and is making me re-write my own cover letter. Thanks for posting. Please don’t call me crazy for asking this, but can I actually mention having applied for the same position in the past? For example, “I applied for the accounting position in the past, but now that I have XYZ experience, I feel I’m much better qualified.” Or would that just draw attention to the fact that they didn’t like me the first time I applied? I think you need to extrapolate a bit – what talents and abilities made you really good at that job that apply to a more traditional role? I’ve noticed that since I have improved my cover letters, I’m starting to get phone interviews, but I think I’m blowing them, somehow. Recruiters seem to be trained to have as flat an affect as possible and not to give any feedback. The recruiter I spoke with last Friday didn’t even say “uh-huh,” or give any verbal punctuation to the conversation at all. It was conversational weightlessness—no gravity or reference point—very unsettling. We’ll see if I get a call for an in-person interview for that one! I doubt it. Game of Thrones! I couldn’t help but smile when I was reading through this. In exchange, I offer exceptional attention to detail, highly developed communication skills, and a talent for managing complex projects with a demonstrated ability to prioritize and multitask. How do you find this one? Alison, put a note in about not taking these because you had heard about hiring managers coming back! As you will see from the attached resume, I’ve built my career in a variety of roles and industries, mostly in small companies where I was not just the admin but also gatekeeper, technology whiz, bookkeeper and marketing guru. I’m not only used to wearing many hats, I sincerely enjoy it; I thrive in an environment where no two work days are exactly the same. Let’s say I’m an interviewer. You tell me that you’re awesome at building legal departments from scratch. If I say, “Okay, and how does that benefit me?” – What’s your response? I am a lawyer. I’ve been told by my Career Services, which I am using for my job search essay writing services cheap, to not write a cover letter longer than 1 page. This seems like its more than one page. Also, if people are scanning in 20-seconds, how helpful is this type of cover letter? Or, is this letter written for someone who believes the letter will reach a hiring manager? I agree. My personal trick is to write the letter in my speaking voice, including contractions and slang, and then take out anything inappropriate when I edit. When I’m done, I have a letter that sounds like me but isn’t too casual. There is not much more you can write there…. The only thing I don’t understand is why Catelyn Stark would want to be in a Targaryen Organization since Aegon killed her to be husband and father-in-law! It’s great to see another example of the type of letter that hiring managers appreciate. I know I would want to receive the second letter! When I was reading the first one, I started skimming and thinking to myself “yadda, yadda, yadda.” This is another example of Alison getting helpful information out there for people who have only heard the old, and worse than useless, information about job hunting. I’m not job searching now, but when I do need to look for another job, I’ll be so much better prepared, and I’ll be able to feel confident in my cover letter and resume after using the information from AAM. Go back to the “hiring is like dating” thing. “Colleen, I saw your profile on the site and I enjoy women who possess hair and personal qualities.” Do you say “Woo, sign me up”? As an HR professional, one who reads many dozens of cover letters per position (even hundreds, at times), I can tell you that this cover letter is simply not succinct enough to be appreciated by overloaded HR folks. If I’m understanding Letter Writer correctly, if you’re changing from one type of job to another, you need to work on being clear about what precisely your value is to your potential employers. When you say “I accomplished X and Y”, if the hiring manager doesn’t have a clear understanding of what “X and Y” really means, then you’re not communicating anything meaningful. Especially when you’re shifting job types, it’s more and more likely that the hiring manager won’t have a clear understanding of what it means, and the hiring manager is unlikely to waste a bunch of time trying to figure it out. Great job, original cover-letter-writer. I have also switched to using this style and I’m convinced it has helped me land interviews I may not otherwise have gotten! Hi, Virginia, some of these topics are just good common sense discussion, but some go very deep and beyond even human understanding. For instance, we have been discussing in a spiritual study group whether souls will be willing to occupy cloned bodies. Highly unscientific, but it might be a good paper for a theology class. Anyway, its a very interesting article and well presented. I would love to be a student today and present papers on some of these topics.

It isn’t necessarily easy to get into these publications useful phrases for essay writing in english, and it may take time and experience to build up your writing to a level that will help you get paid these rates. But you can take solace in the fact that writing work exists beyond content mills and low paying gigs. Finally, I am quite proud to be a Canadian writer that has been fortunate enough to be in high demand. Hi, Tami, I understand that you feel diminished by Martha’s response to Susan; however, her sentences are not run-on and her comma use is perfect (although she has one grammatical error). Both you and Susan should heed her advice. She’s absolutely correct–there has been an issue with English education since the 1960s, and, if many people learn the rules of written English, the US would have not only the best writers but the best work force in the world. My recommendation is Comp-Lab Exercises, a comprehensive and effective self-teaching system. It’s pricy but worth it. This is a really nice post. For as many years as I’ve researched the path of magazine writing, it seems I might be closer to making it happen. I’m in complete agreeance that Martha was a little bit rude. Who honestly gives a shit about one or two errors, especially when grammar and punctuation had nothing to do with the original question. Oh well, there’s writers, and there’s editors. I guess we at least know who is who. Erica Carricondo says: I read that you are looking for women writers for your new magazine. I am interested in discussing options with you. PEACE, AND LOVE AND LIGHT <3 Tami, I am in agreement with you here. Regardless of grammar use- this or that- writing needs to be a balance of idea and so-called ‘execution’. I always enjoy your lists and have even earned income writing for one of the websites you listed in a previous article. I feel like I’m not seeing something very simple here… Martha, Everyone is so triggered. “Martha” is trying to get a rise out of everyone summarizing journal articles, which is exactly what you’re giving her. Just smile and wave. Move on. She holds no significance in your life. So don’t give her that significance. Oh and Martha – if you have to claim how “superior” you are – you aren’t. I would think that not having the correct grammar and punctuation could keep you from getting published as a writer. Come on people do yourself a service and proof read before sending in your article. It then might get published faster. Don’t let the secretary do it. She might not correct it properly. Then where would you be. Out of luck, right? Holly French says: As a freelance writer, it can be a struggle to find high-quality paying work. Jane Elizabeth Malcolm says: Hi, Lisa! I had the same doubt as Justin´s. Thank you so much! One more question about that “pitch”, or the real article, should we send it in PDF? A good secretary can take care of grammar and punctuation errors, but it is much more difficult to create good writing. The mechanics and the art of writing are two very different things. And I’m not just saying that because I am a writer. I’m saying that because it really is — and it can pay the bills. Carson Kohler (@CarsonKohler) is a junior writer at The Penny Hoarder. After recently completing graduate school, she focuses on saving money — and surviving the move back in with her parents. As a writer, you can snatch up freelance gigs or submit pieces to writing contests. You can also do something a little in-between: You can submit pieces to literary publications and, in some cases, earn a pretty penny. Pay: $250 for short stories, $100 for poems and nonfiction Right now, it’s looking for stories, poems and essays, all “pulsing with beats, haunted by melodies,” the listing states. If you think you can handle that, good. Along with the piece you submit, you need to write a short author bio defining your relationship with music. The possibilities for storylines seem endless. Opossum is a “literary marsupial” — or magazine — “animated by music.” Each year, three issues are published online and one special edition comes out in print — paired with a 7-inch vinyl with author readings. Or maybe you find an interesting literary journal calling for “addiction-themed horror fiction” (see below), and it stirs your creativity. Start writing. The topics are endless. There’s no deadline posted. so pull on your headphones and get inspired. Being able to write is an admirable feat. But the famous freelance writers you’ve seen online make their living writing about serious stuff: business analyzing concept essay topics, technology, finance. And you have zero experience or knowledge in any of those areas. So you’re screwed, right? No biz expertise means no dollars? Your Turn: What’s the weirdest thing you’ve ever written about? And Marianne Griebler. a content marketing strategist and writer, said she once accepted a freelance gig offered to her by an ex-colleague. It involved writing product descriptions at $25 each for charming figurines and collectables your granny might like. At first. The hardest part is making sure you and your clients can find each other. So ask around, search online, get to know people you’d like to work with — and keep your eyes (and mind) open for weird writing opportunities. To prove it, I asked some of the writers who read my blog to tell me about their weirdest writing gigs. including how they found them and how much they got paid. If you’re still worried you can’t make money writing about your unusual or out-there experience, you won’t be after reading their answers. Sophie Lizard makes a full-time income working part-time hours as a freelance blogger and copywriter. To help you do the same, she’s created the Ultimate List of blogs that pay $50 to $1,000 for a post -- get your copy here (it’s free!). So here is the deal: We will pay you $100 for your efforts. You don’t need to be an expert—you just need to have English equal to that of a native speaker, a sense of humor, and a love for things unusual or interesting. It works like this: You write your list (10 items per list minimum), you send it in. we reply and say “Great—we’ll publish it” and send you $100 by PayPal (don’t have an account? just make one—it’s easy and free); or we reply and say “Sorry—it isn’t the sort of thing our readers will love—give it another shot.” Just remember, your list should be at least one or two paragraphs per entry. We can not accept lists from writers who do not have a PayPal account; this is non-negotiable. If PayPal doesn’t support your country, please don’t request alternative methods of payment. I have reason to believe that you already know this and that your site is probably going to be your personal catalyst for this type of writer turned money making, full equity site owner, and is a shift that more writers need to make. It’s harder to hit a home run with your draft than it is to write to assignment, with the editor’s input, especially when you’re new to writing for clients. Ended up publishing it on my own website instead for a couple of hundred views instead. Was a shame because it was IMO a damn good article I put together. Linked to it in my name here. Thanks for the information, Carol. I can see how that could make sense. Hello Carol, thanks for answering so fast. I earn between $25-$40 an hour (using voice to text software) writing for a private article mill company that is rarely mentioned. The pay per article is low, the work is soul killing but I have the feeling that I would spend the same amount of time or more working for higher ticket clients. I also fear that I will run into more rules, restrictions and criticism. I get auto-pay time I finish an article and I fear a lengthy process to pass the mustard if I go higher up. The list runs the gamut of topics, from parenting and knitting to business and writing, so there should be something here for everyone. Sorry if you feel that you answered these questions before… ) I just want to make sure that I’ve understood what you’ve said correctly. ) David, I’d look to post on some of the better-reputation sites that don’t pay for starters, rather than hitting the paying markets. Look to get a handful of clips together you can put on a portfolio site — and then hit the paid sites. Hi Carol and Jennifer, this is such a helpful list of websites that pay. I’d like to add Writers Weekly that pays $60 for feature stories. My pitch was accepted today. I’m so happy because it’s my first time getting paid for a guest post. I think I’ll now pitch to some of the websites mentioned here. Babble doesn’t pay for the first 3 posts and scary mommy stopped paying. Thanks for this comprehensive list! Found some new ones!! Please let me know if you need anything else. Ali…the simultaneous submission rule is mostly for magazines. Jennifer Roland is a freelance education, financial institution make my essay for me, and technology writer — and the guest-blog editor here at Make a Living Writing. Her latest book, 10 Takes: Pacific Northwest Writers. was published by Gladeye Press. Thanks again for your help. I think most websites are less competitive to get into than the top print magazines, so maybe give some of these markets a try! Obviously, I’m trying to send people away with that, because I’m mostly too busy to take on new gigs…but I recently had two different companies say yes to that. ? With longform essay walt whitman funny, rates are really rising, and writers should bear that in mind. Just some thoughts. ? I did NOT know that about Babble — we’ll definitely make note for upcoming editions. I know what you mean about the Listverse thing. A while ago I spent several weeks putting together an article for them called “10 Real Life Spies More Unbelievable than James Bond” and was told by their editors that there were too many issues with it by their publishing standards for them to publish. Have you written for any of these markets? Found others that pay well? Tell us in the comments below. We pay $50 per post, and will start accepting writers at the beginning of September. Great post! Thank you so much! ? Thank you for this treasure chest of information. I think it’d be good writing practice to try to get an article published in one of these websites and get paid for it too. Your other option, if it’s a site that does want drafts, is that you’ve got to wait until they get back to you. Or you could front-load it with, “If I don’t hear back in X time, I’m going to move on and pitch this elsewhere.” Recently, I’ve taken to telling people who reach out to me for posts essay on me myself and i, “I’m getting $300-$500. That work for you?” My joke is that when I meet a generalist who’s earning more than a writer with defined niche(s), then I’ll start advising people to be a generalist. Except in 8 years of coaching and interacting with thousands of writers, I NEVER HAVE. Specializing drives better earnings. Below is the new-and-improved, early 2016 edition of Make a Living Writing’s list of websites that pay at least $50 per post. Rather than linking to the list we published last fall, we’re posting a comprehensive and updated new list. We’ve added new markets we learned of in the past 6 months and removed sites that have categories of posts that are below $50. That’s our minimum. The listed websites require blogger’s personal website link in order to submit guest posts. But they are in very different niches or the topic they want are vary with each other. What should I write in my own blog? Is it possible to create 10+ blog in different topic and send the relevant link with the pitch for different sites? I, and I think I speak for many others, GREATLY APPRECIATE a list like this. I am always on the lookout for writing opportunities that pay well. Also, I would like to thank those who have made previous comments. You have provided some sound advice such as sticking to a particular topic/niche and keeping the writing pace going once an article has been submitted (helps keep the mind from wondering if the article was accepted). Thank you and keep tapping that keyboard! Thanks for the update — we read through these comments when we prep the next edition, which we’ll probably be doing fairly soon! This is good info. I use to publish a tax, investing and business magazine and would be interested in contributing articles in same. Changing from Legal Practice to Healthcare Administration Essay - Changing from Legal Practice to Healthcare Administration A personal change I experienced that was very challenging emotionally and psychologically was a career change from legal practice to healthcare administration.
